Ol Doinyo Lengai means the Mountain of God in the Masai language. It is located south of Lake Natron in the Arusha region of Tanzania.

A search on it online will quickly inform you that it is a unique mountain. It is an active volcano. It is the the only mountain in the world that erupts erupts natrocarbonatite lava (looks like fluid black oil which turns white when it comes into contact with moisture/rain).

That said, you are probably wondering how safe it is hiking this very tough to hike active volcanic mountain. I too wondered. Our guide for this trip informed me that there are experts who confirm on the mountain’s activity. They shall advice us whether it is safe to hike it. As of now and the set day of the hike, it is safe.

That said, this hike is VERY HARD. Only experienced hikers are allowed to sign up.

Day 1 (15th Jan);

Arrival at Hotel in Arusha to meet our guide for this experience. He will show us the best spots to have dinner in Arusha. This will be followed by an overnight stay in the hotel. To share details of the hotel with the group going as the day nears.

From Nairobi via shuttle, Arusha is approximately 7 hours.

Day 2 (16th Jan);

After breakfast, our guide and driver will pick us up at the hotel and we will drive down towards Ol’ Donyo Lengai. On the way, we will stop over at Mto wa Mbu. We will arrive at Lengai village and have lunch. We will then visit Lengai Waterfall and Lake Natron. Back to the village for an overnight stay.

Day 3 (17th Jan);

You will have light snacks ahead of the 11pm hike. Our driver will drive us to the base of the mountain. The hike usually takes 6-7 hours to get to the summit. Hike speed will be slow as the mountain is challenging. We will get to the summit as the sun comes up. Praying for clear skies. The mountain has an elevation of 2,962 mtrs.

After a photo session and enjoying the summit views, descend for 4-5 hours.

Our driver will be awaiting and they will drive us back to the village.

We will have lunch and drive back to Arusha where we will spend the night at the hotel.

Day 4 (18th Jan);
