Hiking Kenton and Nathan Hills

Quick Update on Hiking Kenton and Nathan Hills, Kijabe, Kiambu County

Location; Kijabe, Kiambu County. 

Distance and duration; 80 Kms (2 hours) from Nairobi.

Hike Duration; approximately 5 hours. 

Difficulty; Moderate. Nathan Hill is steep and rocky.

Weather; 19 degrees. Cool. The weather is subject to change. So, do your research in advance. 

Cost; Using a tour company, the charges may range between Kes. 2,500 – 3,500 per person. This is inclusive of transport to and from Nairobi and park fees. The price may or may not include snacks. Seeking clarification in advance is advised.

Story Time

As usual, I woke up early. By 540am, we’d left Nairobi headed to our destination. Kenton and Nathan Hills in Kijabe, Kiambu County.

Kenton was a friendly hill that took us about 3 hours to summit and descend. However, some parts of it didn’t have trails and we passed through some shambas with potatoes. The hike started off chilly and my thermal top and fleece jacket came in handy.

Nathan Hill was rocky. If you’ve been wanting to try rock climbing, with your hands, have a go at Nathan Hill. In two hours, we got to the summit. It is really beautiful and has some spectacular photo spots.

The buses were there to ferry us.

Short story huh.

The hike was a darling. By that, I mean okay weather, finished hiking early and my body was in high spirits still.

My two cents on Becoming a Hiker

Dear aspiring/new hiker, hiking is a different experience for everyone. Some have it easy and others like me hit a few snugs.

There are times I’d go hiking and go back home feeling sick. I remember I puked after hiking Sleeping Warrior and Ugali Hills. My legs hurt for three days straight after summiting Elephant Hill. I had altitude sickness (headache, no appetite, puking) the day before summiting Mt Kenya.

Some beginnings are hard. But what I am sure as day is, it gets better.

If you enjoy hiking and are determined to make it a lifestyle like I am, you adjust and learn. You buy the right and necessary gear. You learn the hike diet that works for you. You adopt a new mindset. 

I joined hiking groups to throw myself in the deep end of having to interact with new people. I am an introvert who prefers her space. But while hiking, I find myself engaging with others. It feels like home.
