Story Time

Set departure time from Nairobi town was 5:30am and by 5:40am, the team and I were already on our way to destination Castle Forest. We picked up a few people along Thika Road which is the route we were using.

It was a fun ride as people socialized, had breakfast and enjoyed the road trip. We had one stop over at Magunas Sagana.

Google maps has it that Castle Forest is 141kms (3 hrs) from Nairobi. We got there at 9 am. I was so excited to see that gate with the words Kenya Forest Service, Castle Station. We took a few pictures, did our introductions and warm up then begun our hike.

Castle Forest hike is basically a long walk (20Kms from the gate), except for the path that leads down to the waterfall. From the gate to Castle Forest Lodge is 3.3 Kms. We saw a few overlanders and campers there.

One thing I love about forest hikes is the fresh air, constant birds chirping, waterfalls and my absolute favourite, thick and tall greenery. We encountered all the above.

We would make quick stops amidst the hike to allow everyone to catch up. Where there was a tricky split path, we would wait on each other so none of us would get lost.

One thing that excites me while on a hike is seeing strangers become friends. I have experienced this on many hikes, and seeing this happen on mona_trails hikes was just magical.
With us was a 9 year old boy. We covered the whole distance together. Well done Travis 🥁🥁. His highlight and motivation was swimming in the waterfall. The water froze my legs after walking in it, and I often wondered how he managed to dip his whole body in. He had the most fun on that trip if I may add.

We had our packed lunch at the base of the Ford Waterfall. Having gotten to the waterfall at 1 pm, and had ample time to enjoy the view and experience, we begun our trek back to the gate at 2pm.

At 5 pm, we left Castle Forest for Nairobi feeling fulfilled.

You should definitely join us on our next hike. We are going to Namanga Hills on the 6th November (Saturday). It is a moderate 15km hike. Not kid friendly unless they’ve been on a hike before.
